In the 1960s, warehouses were the prevailing architectural element in downtown San Diego. Nearly 45 years later, vacant lots and abandoned buildings have all but given way to high-rise hotels and urban residences. While the city’s core continues to evolve, the new Stanford Hotels property has undergone a $45 million reconstruction to renew its position in the evolving downtown
landscape. Stanford Hotels of San Francisco is taking cues from the urban energy of the revitalized downtown neighborhood for an amazing $45 million complete renovation of its exterior and interior, including the lobby, guestrooms, restaurants and meeting space.
“When the hotel was built in 1988, it was an early pioneer in the revitalization of downtown,” said Jim Johnson of J.G. Johnson Architects, the architecture firm responsible for the renovation. “Now downtown San Diego is one of the most envied urban environments in the country. This completely refurbished hotel is emerging as a stylish and polished property that will complement the new direction of
downtown. Located in the historic Gaslamp Quarter of San Diego, the property’s distinctive 22-story tower has received a contemporary finish that has transformed it into a prominent symbol of downtown San Diego’s
skyline. J.G. Johnson Architects of Denver designed the 260-foot tower to encompass the cultural and architectural influences of San Diego, creating a modern design while retaining the sophisticated lines of the original building.
“It’s rare for a hotelier to completely change out an existing property and start over from scratch,” stated Jim Durbin, general manager of the property. “Because our San Diego property is so well located, it made sense for us to invest the time, energy and resources into making it the very best hotel downtown San Diego has to offer.
”The hotel is painted in subtle hues to blend seamlessly with the atmosphere of downtown. A limestone faÁade
streches along the outside of the building, encasing the base of the
property. Hong Kong-based designer Andrew Sobenko of Andrew Sobenko Associates Ltd. and Dave Dunphy of Concepts 4, Inc. in Long Beach, Calif. partnered to create contemporary interiors by blending minimalist style and traditional dÈcor.
The hotel lobby embodies the modern elegance of the property with plush angular-shaped furniture and an ultra-modern chandelier hung from the lobby’s high-arched ceilings. Guests and visitors relax in an inviting sitting area with comfortable, yet chic, furnishings at the hotel’s entrance. Business travelers use this area as an alternative to working in their guestrooms, conducting business via high-speed wireless Internet
access. Guestrooms boast an elegant and inviting ambience. Plush down comforters in crisp white duvets adorn pillow-top mattresses that provide restful support for road-weary travelers. In the bathroom, granite countertops in a rich dark hue, stainless steel fixtures, a deep wash basin, and mosaic tile flooring add to the modern atmosphere.
Because every guestroom is on the ninth floor or above, all the rooms and suites provide breathtaking views of the bay and downtown San Diego’s expanding skyline. Many of the contemporary designed suites provide premium views into the new ballpark, allowing guests to relax in the comfort of their hotel room while they catch a live Padres game. Other rooms offer unparalleled views of the city lights, Coronado Bay Bridge, sailboats on the bar and
more. The hotel has 306 luxuriously appointed guestrooms, three VIP suites, 12 executive suites and 33 junior executive suites. All rooms are equipped with high-speed Wi-Fi capabilities, a two-line speakerphone, and an in-room safe large enough to store a laptop.
The hotel is located on 660 K Street, San Diego. For more information about the property please call (619) 696-0234.
